What do I need in an Optic?

Posted by SET Team on 19th Mar 2025

When choosing the perfect optic, three key features are most important: type, function, and price.

There are many different types of optic, including Low Power Variable Optics (LPVOs), red dots/holographic sights fixed magnification scopes (like ACOGs and other scopes), and iron sights. Some of these may seem similar, but are very different Each of these addresses the same question but provides the answer in different ways.

Function is another critical factor. This question can have many answers. You need to determine what your intentions for your setup. Are you looking for dedicated long-range shooting? Short-range? Reliability? Each option has trade-offs and can overcome some challenges, such as adding a magnifier to a red dot or holographic sight or using backup sights with a dedicated scope.

Price will ultimately eliminate many options. While technology has improved and reduced costs, there is a wide range of quality between a cheap sight from Amazon and a brand like Holosun. Also, consider the customer service of the brand you choose. EOTech, for example, offers some of the best customer support and stands by its products.

At the end of the day, the best optic is the one you know how to use and train with regularly. You can buy the most expensive optic out there, but if you don’t get out and shoot with it, it won’t matter.
